Stonebridge Boxing Club was founded in 2010 by local resident Aamir Ali. Located in the once notorious Stonebridge park estates, the club is an active fighter against gun and knife crime by keeping kids off the streets and out of trouble. The club was on the brink of closing last year due to financial difficulties, but through the help of the local community and the likes of Amir Khan, Audley Harrison, Team Sauerland and the John Lyon charity, the club rose like a phoenix from the ashes.
Based on the top floor of Kassing a House on Winchelsea Road, the gymnasium is reminiscent of the iconic Kronk Gym in Detroit. With the windows shut and the heating on full blast, the gym turns into a furnace and the blood, sweat and tears can be tasted and smelt. When a session is in full-flow; the rhythmic beat of skipping, the thud of punches on the heavy bags and footsteps in the ring create this amazing-electric energy and atmosphere. This is not the place to have fun or a laugh, only the truly committed and dedicated survive the SBC experience. As one famous quote reads; “you can play football and cricket, but you don’t play boxing”.
With members representing every ethnic background possible, the club is a real fusion of culture, a friendly and warm place. The Stonebridge Boxing Club is not a team but a family, full of respect and support for one another. There are no egos or show-offs, and the veteran ABA fighters motivate and encourage each other and the junior members in giving it their all. There is no rivalry or bad blood between the guys; they are a band of brothers.
British middleweight champions Kreshnik Qato & Toks Owoh are now senior coaches at SBC, and can be seen coaching, sparring & mentoring the young hopefuls. They are true inspiration and role model to all the fighters.
Stonebridge Boxing Club continues to grow from strength to strength, and with a stable of promising young fighters looking set to reach the top, SBC are certain to leave their mark on British boxing and the Stonebridge community.
